For Pregnant Mums and New Parents

 

It is important for a mother to take care of her own oral health as well the oral health of her baby. In fact, she should begin even before the baby is born! This guide outlines the key messages of oral health from pregnancy through the toddler years.

 
Prenatal
  1. Get a dental checkup.
  2. Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  3. Floss daily.
  4. Limit the number of times you eat sweet or starchy snacks.
  5. Seek prenatal care.
  6. Get adequate calcium.

0-6 months
  1. Clean baby's gums daily.
  2. Avoid putting baby to bed with a bottle.
  3. At 6 months, ask your doctor or your dental professional about fluoride supplements.

6-18 months
  1. At between 6 to 12 months, begin using a training cup.
  2. The Australian Dental Association recommends that you encourage your child to drink from a cup by his/her first birthday.
  3. Take baby for first dental checkup at around the first birthday.

18-24 months
  1. Limit the number of times toddler eats snacks each day.
  2. Brush toddler's teeth after breakfast and before bedtime. Begin using a pea-sized dab of low fluoride toothpaste once toddler can spit out.
  3. Visit the your dental professional for a checkup.
